Meet the Staff
Thomas Swim
Tommy has called Dothan home since 2009. After retiring from military and civil service as a Warrant Officer and Instructor Pilot at Fort Rucker, he began his own journey of mental wellness that became the pursuit of a masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University. Tommy is an Associate Licensed Counselor (ALC06067) in Alabama currently practicing under the supervision of Dr. Virginia Mayer, Ed. D, LPC-S. He is also a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). Tommy is grounded in a Christian Worldview and enjoys working from an Internal Family Systems (IFS) approach. He is recently trained in EMDR and remains under consultation. While he prefers to meet in-person, Tommy also provides tele-health services when appropriate.
“My primary focus is to work with adult men (ages 18-99) and the military/first responder community. I believe the client is the expert of their experience and will instinctively recognize their path toward wellness given the right conditions. I see my role as a collaborative facilitator, providing a safe and confidential space to engage this work. Mental health is often organized around diagnosing pathology. While this can be extremely helpful in providing insight and clinical direction, it often limits the client’s potential. I partner with providers of the medical model from a wellness perspective. The IFS model views the mind as plural, and assesses the activities of a plural mind. I view DSM diagnoses as various ways of describing the behaviors of activated parts. Rather than pathologizing symptomatic behaviors, I view them as natural efforts to solve problems, stay safe, or survive.”
